Windows Live Messenger
Setting Up Windows Live Messenger (Windows)

Introduction

This tutorial guides you through the process of setting up Windows Live Messenger (aka MSN Messenger) for Windows so it will work from inside the CSU network. This tutorial assumes you are using the latest version of Windows Live Messenger , which is freely available from the Microsoft website.

You will need:

  • Your my.csu username and password
  • An installed copy of Windows Live Messenger
  • A connection to the Internet (e.g. using CSU Dial Up)

Step 1

Before setting up MSN Messenger you should ensure that Internet Explorer is correctly configured for the CSU network. A guide outlining how to configure Internet Explorer is available at: http://www.csu.edu.au/division/dit/student/resnet/proxy.pdf

Internet Explorer must be correctly configured for Messenger to work (even if you use another browser such as Firefox).

Step 2

Open Windows Live Messenger. You can usually open Windows Live Messenger by clicking on the Start button, selecting Programs, and then clicking on the Windows Live Messenger entry.

Once open, go to the menu icon (see right) menu and select "Tools" and then "Options".

Step 3

In the new window that appears select "Connection" from the list to the left.

Click on the "Advanced Settings" button.

Step 4

Make sure that the "SOCKS" field is blank, along with the "Username" and "Password" fields immediately below it.

Now look at the "HTTP" section. The "HTTP" field should be greyed out. Enter your my.csu username into the "Username" field, and your my.csu password into the "Password" field.

Click the "OK" button to close the window. Click the "OK" button again for the remaining Options window.

Step 5

Enter your MSN account details into the login screen and then click the "Sign In" button. Windows Live Messenger should now connect and sign you in. Please note it can take a couple of minutes for the sign in process to complete.

Congratulations, you have finished the guide.
