Effective teachers are committed to their students and their holistic development.
* Teachers seek to enable students to achieve excellence.
* Teachers are aware of and nurture students’ needs in all areas.
* Teachers use their awareness of the students’ differences in order to teach appropriately and specifically.
* Teachers should have an understanding of students development and treat all students equally.
* Teachers take responsibility for the welfare of students in the school environment.
A Holistic Approach means that teachers take on the responsibility of educating students in a variety of areas both social and academic. To do this they must have a great knowledge of the individual students.
To develop this competency I will need to:
1) continue study of human development in order to understand the development
of the average student.
2) get to know my classes well and the try to tailor my lesson plans to their
individual needs.
3) have higher hidden objectives in my lesson plans in order to teach my students
about social behaviour and relate the content to the outside world.
4) just be there and be supportive of the students efforts in school and provide
them with a supportive environment.
By doing this the students may be able to achieve excellence.
Strengths and Weaknesses of this competency:
The strength of this approach is that students will enter the adult world with
the social knowledge necessary to function in that world. The weakness is
that even though it would be nice to focus on each student’s individual
needs it is difficult in a large class, some are likely to be overlooked.
Current evidence of this competency:
I have begun learning developmental psychology as part of my school counselling
training and we have studied different teaching techniques in EED112.
