6) Assessment and Reporting

Effective teachers are accomplished in assessing and reporting the learning outcomes of their students.

* Teachers can improve their teaching by seeing assessing the students to see if they have taught effectively.

* Teachers use both formal and informal assessment strategies.

* Teachers should always be aware of exactly how their students are progressing individually and compared to the rest of the class.

Through assessment and reporting teachers can evaluate the students and their own performances, so that new strategies can be developed to improve learning.

To develop this competency I will need to:
1) carefully diagnose the class so that you know what needs to be taught.
2) ask questions every lesson to re-enforce and make sure that students are understanding the lessons.
3) ask for feedback at the ends of lessons to see if the students have any questions or would like to explore something further.
4) keep lesson plans up to date so that you know what has been taught and what needs to be assessed.
5) after assessments and reporting reflect on how you can improve your teaching for any topic that was a weakness for the students.

Strengths and Weaknesses of this competency:
Strengths of this competency are that the teacher can make sure everyone is learning and paying attention in the classroom and can re-teach anything students are having trouble with. However, a weakness is that there are mixed ability classes and those who do understand the work may not appreciate the repetition of teaching. Also some people just aren’t good at assessments even though they do have the knowledge.

Current evidence of this competency:
I really have little experience in this area at present apart from proof reading my own assessments.
