7) Reflective Practitioner

Effective teachers are reflective practitioners and embody the qualities of the educated person and exemplary citizen.

* Teachers model the type of person they want their students to be.

* Teachers have an understanding of numeracy and literacy and its importance in the classroom and lives of the students.

* Teachers are constantly aware that their cultural backgrounds have an effect on the way they teach.

* Teachers use reflection to critique and improve their abilities as educators.

* Teachers abide by the ‘code of conduct’ developed by the government and are aware of their responsibilities to the students.

Teachers use reflection to understand the impact their past experiences, as teachers and previously, has on their teaching styles and the students themselves. They use this reflection to improve themselves and become appropriate role models for the students.

To develop this competency I will need to:
1) reflect on my past experiences at school, what I thought of the teachers and their strategies.
2) evaluate those experiences drawing from them and utilising the good experiences.
3) using my new knowledge to understand those experiences and develop my own strategies.
4) use my own strategies in lesson plans then reflect on and evaluate their effectiveness.
5) perhaps get students to give feed back.

Strengths and Weaknesses of this competency:
The strengths of this competency are that a teacher can constantly improve and become a better educator, the best teacher they can be. However, sometimes a person can’t see their own faults and nothing can ever be perfect in a changing system with such a diverse range of students.

Current evidence of this competency:
I used reflection on my past experiences as a student in high school to write my first teaching philosophy for EPT107.
