Content management systems

A content management system is a valuable tool to Information Architects as it provides a program to edit and create content for a particular website. Content editors can create html files which can be accessible via the homepage of the website. In addition the files and folders featured in the system provide a hierarchy organisation of content and the URL of final web page.

Content management systems are software which manages workflow from content authoring to editing to publishing (Morville & Rosenfeld, 2007, p. 358). This software allows an Information Architect to create a structure of a website by adding folders and then files which then makes up the overall navigation system of where information can be accessed. Information and content can be edited in the html files to easily update information required. In addition media files and images can be imported or attached to these files. After html files have been created or edited the Information Architect can then preview and publish the web page to allow users access to the content.

The Interwoven TeamSite content management server includes functions such as data organisation and content interfaces which branches content into divisions (Hastings & McNeal, 2006, p. 48). This content management system allows the Information Architect to add new files which is structured in the featured or created folders. The way that this system structures the content is an advantage to editors and the users of the website. Users can easily access information and content particularly from websites using the CMS2 version of Interwoven TeamSite.
