Interwoven TeamSite Evaluation |
Interwoven TeamSite EvaluationIntroductionInterwoven TeamSite is a content management system which allows either the content author, editor, or administrator to add and edit webpages to a website. The CMS2 version of Interwoven Teamsite allows content to appear in a streamline format for the end user with the slide show images of homepages visually appealing to users. Interwoven TeamSite exampleThe University of Newcastle Library is an example of a webpage developed and edited by the CMS2 version of Interwoven TeamSite (The University of Newcastle Library, 2011). It features two global navigation toolbars which provide access to the content of the website. In addition it shows a slide show of images which catches the eye of the user and some of which are linked to more information. The end display of a webpage of the Interwoven TeamSite allows organised display of the content accessible as shown in figure 1.
figure 1 The editing/creating of websites using Interwoven TeamSiteThe CMS2 version of Interwoven TeamSite can be complicated for first time content editors of the website. What makes it complicated is that files need to be created separately and the index pages are created in a separate section of the system. Navigating to the correct folder to attach the information can take some time for the content editors to become accustomed to. Furthermore the pages or content boxes can be confusing as to where to edit or add content as shown in figure 2. Other features such as creating a sidebar image, supplementary material, submitting resources, and creating image slideshows can initially be confusing. The advantage with the CMS2 system however is that the site administrator can approve the pages before the web page is available for public view.
figure 2 These challenges highlighted by the fact that a website which has been developed for University of Newcastle staff using this content management system (The University of Newcastle, 2011). This website helps staff to use the CMS2 by referring to this website and the featured manual of the different features available of the Interwoven TeamSite system. In comparison CMS1 was easier to use for content editors as it was just a case of clicking on an html file/page and all information was imported to that page and content edited as opposed to cms2 which requires other files to be saved elsewhere and then combining these files to create the required web page for the site. Usability of websites using Interwoven TeamSiteThe advantage of CMS2 is that it is more visual and easier to locate information to the end user. Slideshows of three to five images are eye catching to the users as these are featured predominately in the top of the page and the changing images attract the users’ attention. Furthermore the content and information is more accessible to the users as opposed to CMS1 information as it is less cluttered and easier to navigate using the improved navigation tools available. ConclusionIn conclusion the CMS2 version of Interwoven TeamSite allows more accessibility of content to the target user group of the website. The system can be complicate to content editors to begin with. However the way that information is organised and accessible to users of the website makes this content management system valuable to the Information Architects who choose to use it.
