Mike Curran - Technical Support

Mike at Jervis Bay
Hi, my name is Mike Curran.

Let me introduce myself, I have been working in the IT field for nearly 7 years and I have created this website for Assessment 3 of ITC212, which I am studying distance via CSU.

I am currently studying a Bachelor of Science with a major in Physics and minors in Information technology and Mathematics. Ever since I was a little kid I have wanted to be an Astronomer. The Universe is vast and the potential for discovery is unending, it would be amazing to wake up everyday and discover something I, or anyone else, had never seen before. As I've gotten older, I've been more and more interested in scientific communication as a vocation and passion. I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to understand this Cosmos, which as Carl Sagan said "In which we float like a mote of dust, in the morning sky."

I hope that completing this degree will open up more opportunities for me to work in fields and roles I am passionate about such as education, science and technology. It is fair to say that it is extremely difficult to balance full time work, commuting ten hours a week, university and just life in general, but this is something I have wanted to do since I was a kid and is something I have to complete.

In my current role as a Technical Support Officer I am responsible for the provision of first and second level support in a medium sized organisation. In addition I assist in the maintenance of more than 500 workstations and 200 mobile devices. It is a challenging role and one that requires many varied skillsets as well as complex troubleshooting skills and customer service ability.

I am hopeful that the experience I am gaining will assist me in the long term in potential educational roles.
