Barriers to developing reading skills

Busy lifestyles

Barriers are the obstacles which hold back the development of reading skills. Barriers can be:

  • busy lifestyles with sport and other leisure activities taking up all free time,
  • crowded school curricula with less time allocated to reading for pleasure, and
  • medical issues such as poor concentration, hearing and sight.

  We can overcome barriers by:

  • developing a reading culture at home by being a model for reading and allocating 'family time' for reading,
  • encourage reading a variety of formats and medias which may interest children such as graphic novels, mnagazines and author or book websites,
  • seeking advice from teachers and library staff as to which books to buy or borrow which encourage good reading habits, and
  • having regular medical check-ups.
