Autonomy's IDOL

Autonomy’s IDOL is one such classification system that “automatically generates taxonomies and instantly organizes the data into a familiar child/parent taxonomical structure. IDOL automatically identifies, names and creates each node based on an understanding of the concepts within the data set as a whole. IDOL eliminates the need for any human intervention, preventing the errors and inconsistency that are frequently associated with manual categorization” (Autonomy IDOL, n.d.). Whilst it is questionable about Autonomy’s claims about automatic categorisation being superior to manual classification (Moreville, 2000), its scope of taxonomic libraries includes biotechnology, human resources, information technology, engineering, pharmaceutical and financial services subjects among many others (Autonomy IDOL, n.d.).

IDOL’s ability to mix automatic and manual approaches, allows for deep taxonomies to be made, is XML based, can recognise and extract entities such as people, events, places etc and plot their relationships, supports a large amount of document formats, provides visual taxonomies and creates a back up history of all changes made (Chaudhry, 2010). IDOL is able to automatically tag documents and content, and is based on statistical calculations, and aims to use as little manual interaction as possible to afford time spent on other duties.
