Automated tagging and classification software is not revolutionary in completely changing the classification based work of information architects. It has helped with the immense amount of data and content that is produced constantly and digitally requiring organisation. For that reason, automated taxonomy and classification software is important and should be employed by information architects when tackling big projects that require the organisation of large amounts of data and documents. IDOL’s software has been employed successfully by many institutions looking to gain an edge in organising data as case studies on the University of California San Francisco’s use of IDOL to maintain high research excellence while dealing with large amounts of data from trials operating at the same time (UCSF Case Study, 2012), and the UK’s leading media intelligence provider Precise’s need to monitor and evaluate in real time the vast amounts of information that was being produced via news broadcasts, print and digital services (Precise Case Study, 2012). Without the benefits of Autonomy’s IDOL neither of these institutions would have been able to overcome these problems and streamline their information architecture departments or needs, and automatic generation and classification software are important to tackle these and other challenges.
