Even though it is not one of the bigger names, Wolfram Alpha’s Facebook analytics tool is interesting in how its results could affect business and society in our socially networked world. The Facebook report application (Wolfram Alpha, n.d.) analyses certain information about connections, networks and information in regards to a users Facebook page. This includes a breakdown of personal information (name, birth date, location) and activities (links, statuses, photos) but also more in-depth data like most used words and terms, age of connections, gender, relationship status and locations of contacts. This information is incredibly important in terms of marketing and figuring out your collective audience if it was to be used by a corporation through their social media network, or even for an individual such as a blogger or artist who wanted to see the make up of their audience.
The process is simple, and includes giving Wolfram Alpha permission to analyse your Facebook account. Once access has been granted the application connects to the user’s account and analyses the data before giving back a report.
