About this site
This site was created by David Furler for an assignment for the Introduction to Information Architecture subject at Charles Sturt University. If you are not the person marking this assignment you probably shouldnt be here :).
Technical details
Amusingly, for a site that reviews content management systems, this site was hand coded using the Notepad++ text editor for Windows and also TextWrangler when working on a Mac. Notepad++ kills TextWrangler, but it is unfortunately not available for OSX. Although it is nice to have hand-coding skills, its fairly unimportant in an IA context, and I would like to humbly suggest CSU allow for the installation (or at least use of a free host) of an actual CMS to be used by the next group of students :p.
The logo was created in about two minutes using a borrowed computer with Adobe Photoshop. I spent many years using Photoshop extensively in a past career. I have barely touched it in five years though so now I suck. I always thought it would be like riding a bicycle, it's not. Sorry.
A note about search
I was debating whether to insert a Google search widget onto this page, about the only option available in this hosting environment. I wasn't sure if it was expected as a part of the "Information Architecture" requirements for the site. Morville and Rosenfeld write that one should "think twice before you make your site searchable" (2007, p. 145), and in pondering this I considered their question of "would the user expect to search the site". I am not sure I can answer that one, but in my opinion the answer was that no, the marker (Hello!) would have no need to search the site, unless it was simply a point-scoring exercise, the site with its small size and limited subject matter would not benefit from a half-baked search solution. I hope I got that right.
