LIBRARY ON YOUR DESKTOP

Objectives:

- Familiarise staff with what library services & resources are available from their desktop computers.

Learning Outcomes:

- Participants should be familiar with the kind of information available on the Library's web pages.

- Participants should be able to locate desired information on the Library's web pages.

Timing:

Approximately 1 hour.

Rationale:

The class should be tailored wherever possible to the interests and levels of sophistication of the staff members in attendance. Sections can be left out or expanded as necessary. The aim is to promote DIY services wherever possible to ease the load on counter staff. It is also to encourage staff to make items available via electronic access for remote users so that they are not disadvantaged and to free up staff for other tasks.

Logon to the CSU library homepage

Sections can be done in any order, but I've chosen to do the About the Division section first to get the basic information out of the way.

Hours - latest amendments and upcoming changes are always available here. Saves phoning and asking!

Publications & policies - particularly promote electronic access/retrieval of the Referencing Guide.

Contacts - Liaison librarians, TS staff etc

Services

Focus on the DE section here if you have staff with DE students. A quick tour of what we offer DE students online and how they can request items/searches.

Request Forms - ILL form/ Unison form/ New book proposals of interest to staff. Other forms of interest to their students.

Training - Lunchtime clinics advertised here. Links to online tutorials.

Guides & Assistance - Help sheets for DIY catalogue services and databases, Info on Jumpstart, Procite, & Subject Guides. Useful for staff as a refresher and for their students.

Reciprocal Borrowing - details of libraries offering staff and students reciprocal rights and under what conditions. Electronic submission forms for Unison.

Resources

Catalogues - briefly go through web and telnet access. Show them how they and their students can search other libraries' catalogues. Useful if they are planning a 'research weekend away' in a metropolitan area.

Fulltext Journals - Lists all ejournals and the vendor along with start and finish dates.

Databases - As well as accessing the databases you can search the CSU journal list, access trial databases and help sheets for locating articles from this page.

General Reference - Good for weather, calculators, ABS, online dictionaries etc. Tailor examples to suit the class members.

Subject Guides - Go through those of interest to the class members.

Procite - Mention that this is now the access point. Do not go into Procite except to explain what it is if staff do not know already and promote classes on offer.

Electronic Reserve - Promote this to staff as a means to make access to RR material (lecture notes and articles) faster for both internal and external students. Encourage them to consider using this service. Instructions to lecturers will very soon appear here. Also exam papers, but mention that copying for DE students is done by the student associations and not the library.

New Titles - of interest to staff.

Search Engines - all the most useful search engines together here in one convenient place!

Webezy - can be accessed from the training screen as well. Explain what it is and how it can be used by staff and their students as an introduction or refresher course. Promote it to staff especially for their students.
