Curriculum & Knowledge

Curriculum refers to all subject matter that is taught in schools. It includes both planned and unplanned learning experiences (Reid 2004).

Planned curriculum is outlined in syllabus documents. These provide state wide learning outcomes for students from K-6 (BOSNSW). ‘Planned curriculum is based upon areas of knowledge that governments and school systems require us to teach (Reid 2004).’

Hidden Curriculum refers to implicit teaching or learning experiences, which do not appear within the formal curriculum (Livesey n.d.). It involves '...those things pupils learn through experience of attending a school rather than the stated educational objectives of such institutions' (Haralambos 1991 cited in Livesey n.d.). Learning experiences of children are influenced by factors such as:

  • Class, gender and ethnicity (Eades 1993; Livesey n.d.).
  • Understanding of classroom discourses (Barrett-Plough & Rohl 2000; Eades 1993; Gee 1991).
  • Teacher values, attitudes, behaviour and expectations (Livesey n.d.).

The following items have been included as evidence of my knowledge and experience in this area. The essay plan below relates to hidden curriculum. The other two articles demonstrate my practical experience with regard to curriculum planning and implementation.
