Educating Students with Special Needs

Effective teaching involves assessing and responding to the social, emotional and academic needs of all students. The following papers reflect my philosophies with regard to the education of students with special needs.

Gifted and Talented Students

It is an extract from a 45-minute seminar on catering for the needs of students with gifts and talents.

‘This is one of the best papers I have read during my time in higher education. Your work was thoroughly researched, cleverly organised, and reflected considerable polish’ (Marker’s comment).

Depression in Schools

Schooling is one of multiple environmental factors, which have been linked to the development of depression in young people (Hallahan & Kauffman 2000; Kranz & Maloney 1999; Miezitis 1992).

This paper examines causes and indicators of depression in children and adolescents and suggests steps which parents and educators may take in order to minimise the effects of depression among students.

'A very competent piece of writing - excellent. Best wishes for your future studies. This paper certainly argues well for them' (Marker's comment).

Students with Disabilities

My understanding of the needs of students with disabilities has been developed through a combination of study and practical experience. As part of EED401 I undertook voluntary work experience in special education. During this period I worked alongside teachers in IO and IM classes, assisting with classroom activities, particularly in the areas of reading, comprehension and maths. I also spent some time with special needs students who had been integrated into the regular classroom. I attended weekly Special Education Team meetings along with the school counsellor, special education teachers and support staff. This experience was extremely valuable and enhanced my understanding of issues relating to students with special needs considerably.
