Pedagogy refers
to ‘the art and science of teaching’ (Oxford English Dictionary
1993). It involves teaching methods, programmes, practices and strategies.
As teachers
we need to develop an understanding of the ways in which students learn.
We must adjust teaching practices in order to provide optimal learning
opportunities for each student (Board of Studies NSW).
Effective
pedagogy:
- Caters for
the needs of individual students
- Applies
and refines strategies in a range of contexts
- Aims
to develop critical thinking and judgement skills
- Is
relevant and engaging
- Involves
ongoing assessment and feedback - Assessment is a fundamental aspect
of effective teaching practice. It helps to evaluate
program effectiveness
and sets the direction for future teaching and learning.
