By experimenting with various essential oils you can easily create wonderful scents and ranges for both men and women. Let your intuition be your guide ~ open up your senses and get creative.
How about woods and spices for the men, and what lady can resist lavender ?
A tea tree and eucalyptus blend is a great winter refresher under a nice warm shower, while clove and lemongrass creates a uniquely different flavour. I know it sounds weird, but it's not !
Whip out your mortar and pestle! Adding dried crushed lavender leaves, crushed clove buds or even cirtus rind to the soap batter at trace, adds nice texture and enhances the essential oil used. Give it a go and experiment, it's just like cooking.
Some oils are to be avoided for various reasons such as:
As with base, superfatting and carrier oils; research the essential oils you're using.
The recipes provided do not contain preservatives. Using grapefruit seed extract can prolong shelf life from 6-12 months to 7-9 years ! Great for storage soap or popping a bar in the sock drawer.
Depending on your budget, there is a vast variety of essential oils that are not only economical, but also contain therapeutic properties and value. I always prefer to use essential oils that do something: antiseptic, antifungal, antibiotic.
New Directions Australia, is a great supplier of quality, economical, and certified organic oils. A 100ml bottle easily makes 2-4 batches. 2 batches if you use the same essential oil in the one batch, or a bottle can be stretched out to 4 batches if you blend together with another essential oil.
I prefer to use only 2 essential oils per batch. However, if you like to play with harmony, you will find there are base, middle and top note scents.
It's important to note that fragrance oils are not essential oils. Fragrance oils are synthetic and as I love to make only natural products, artificial colours and oils are not used.
