Stress is defined as a person's response to their environment and is measured in terms of arousal or stimulation. Stress is often a very individual response – different people respond differently to the same stimulus – what might be ‘stressful’ for one person and impact on them in a negative way, may be ‘invigorating’ to another, with only positive outcomes.
The human body responds to events that provoke stress (stressors) by activating the nervous system and specific hormones. The hypothalamus signals the adrenal glands to produce more of the hormones adrenaline and cortisol and release them into the bloodstream.
