Diagramming software are software solutions utilized by the information architect to design layouts and show clients how the development of the web site is progressing.

The information architect seeks to represent information in the form of a clear diagram. Software programs used in these instances are usually GUI ( graphical user interface) based and feature WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) diagram editing.

Typical software solutions used are Schematic, Smart Draw, Dia, Immigrate, Microsoft Visio, Inspiration and Concept Draw 7 and Power Point..

Flow charts are often used to display the direction of the site prior to the actual web site being created. These flowcharts may be seen as critical in the complex process of designing and documenting the web site.

One of the most powerful presentation software packages is PowerPoint. It allows text, images and graphics to be imported into PowerPoint, creating interesting and eye catching presentations. PowerPoint has the ability to create flow charts itself or to create a flowchart in a different software package i.e. Microsoft Word and then import it into PowerPoint. It can also be used to demonstrate a web site in the early planning stages and prior to the website being finalised.

One drawback with PowerPoint is that it is more suited to quite simplistic websites rather than intracate websites. This makes it an excellent software program for a relatively inexperienced information architect.
