On April 10, 1912, the British Ocean Liner Titanic sank in more than two miles of water on her maiden voyage. This great ship was considered a high-tech marvel and had been declared by many as “unsinkable.” Her executive officer, Captain Edward Smith, stated in 1907 that modern ships were so well built that he couldn’t “imagine any condition which would cause a ship to founder. Modern ship building has gone beyond that.”
The folly that man is the master of his own destiny, and does not need the help or intervention of God, was clearly in evidence that cold April night 100 years ago. Does anyone really believe that had any help been extended to those dying that night, that they wouldn’t have given all they had in trade for it?
As a nation, are we not in a similar situation today? This ship of state, a high-tech marvel to be sure, is commanded by men exhibiting the same thinking as Captain Smith, never willing to concede that we need the help of God for this foundering ship called America.
If we needed God to bring this country into existence, why would we not need Him to sustain it? Are we ashamed to say publicly what we believe privately? Are we so intimidated by those who choose not to hold the biblical beliefs of the founders and ourselves, that we watch silently as America sinks into the depths as the Titanic did?
