It is my understanding that pedagogy is the art of teaching. The Concise Oxford Dictionary defines pedagogy as “the science of teaching.” Pedagogy is how we teach. At university we are gaining an understanding of the art and science of teaching. Being an expert in teaching pedagogy is imperative to being an effective teacher. As effective teachers we must have an array of teaching strategies, in depth knowledge of our subject and a love of it. Pedagogy is about being able to adapt this knowledge and love of subject so that each student can get the upmost out of your teaching.

Scenario: for an assessment in one of my subjects (Australian Literature) I was asked to make a presentation to the class about a novel I had been assigned to read. In the subject outline it as made explicit that I should consider myself the teacher and that I was responsible for running the class that day. I had to plan what I was going to say and how I was going to present it. I decided to focus on a certain aspect of the novel, that being a specific chapter. I broke down the series of events for the class then brought up the themes involved. After that I began the class discussion, allowing for those who had red the book to have their say and those who were confused by it to ask questions.
Assessment is fundamental to one’s pedagogical practices. It is through assessment that you as a teacher can note whether your style of teaching is effective. Teachers through effective pedagogical practices should be able to communicate to students what objectives will be achieved and how students will achieve them. Assessment is also how teachers can be sure students are keeping up with the work being set. The most common forms of assessment are tests or essays. However there other assessments that teachers may use, eg: checklists, portfolios, creative presentations or power point. Possibly the most important method of assessment for teachers is that of observation. This is something that is done instinctively. It is the every day assessment of the student so that teachers can be sure the student is learning what is required.
Evidence
I have not as yet had enough ongoing class time to witness or be involved in student assessment. However, I have been learning how to assess my own teaching strategies and understanding of pedagogy. Below is a scanned copy of one of the sheets I have been using to assess my teaching practices on PRAC in schools .
