the basic bass playin style is using finger runing with the right hand resting your thumb on the pick up of the bass. the left hand then works the fret board and creates the notes by pressing down betweeen the frets to change the note you are playing. the body of the bass is normally shaped in a way that the bottom of it can rest on your right leg when u sit down allowing for most comfort while playing.
before playing for extende periods of time you should do some finger streching exercises in order to avoid injurys like capet tunnel syndrome.
To play bass there are many techniques to create various sounds that can corrispond with the style or genre of music you are playing. The main expressive techniques are finger running, slap, pop, slides, hammer-ons and pulloffs and vibro's.
for instance the slap and pop method, or "thumbstyle", mostly associated with funk, metal and jazz.
