Pedagogy and Assesment

The core business of teaching is pedagogy. Pedagogy is the art and science of teaching. It recognises that how one teaches is inseparable from what one teaches, from what and how one assesses and from how one learns. Assessment definition. Assessment allows us as teachers to:
• Extract student’s prior knowledge, helping us to plan effective lessons.
• Predict future achievements, set goals for the children individually and as a class.
• Motivate students, it gives them a reason to work hard.
• Judge how well the students have learned, how much of their knowledge can they apply?
• Measure improvement, how much have students’ improved from one assessment to the next.

It is important to use a wide range of assessment techniques in the form of diagnostic, formative and summative depending on what knowledge is being tested. It is also important to use a mix of formal and informal assessment. Using many different types of assessment will give a wider and more accurate view of the children’s knowledge.

It is important to undertake assessment at various times thought the year. This will help show the children’s’ learning path and how much they have improved. It is vital to keep a record of all assessment in an organised fashion so that it can be compiled to give an accurate account of the child’s learning. (Marsh,2004)

Evidence – Extract from my Introduction to the Profession, practicum assignment

Justification - I included this extract from my assignment because it shows that I am able to asses lessons and classroom situations. This indicated that I will be able to effectively reflect on my own lessons.

Evidence -An assessment I did of a maths presentation in our class

Justification - I included this grading form because it shows that I am able to mark assessment tasks fairly.
