Troll tips

Troll behaviour and temperament must be known in order to know what to do if you come across a troll in the wild.

  • Trolls generally don't make appearances in front of humans. They live in caves or huts with families or bands.

  • They fear sunlight, as they turn to stone (calcify) or explode if they have contact with it. This is because they can't convert sunlight to calcium. When exposed to sunlight their stomach swells - gas pushes into their intestines and blood vesels and then they explode. Older trolls calcify as their veins are too narrow, so the expansion occurs inside their bones. Lightning also frightens them. A torch using ultra-violet light is a useful tool. However, we recommend not to kill trolls unless there is absolutely nothing else you can do to escape.

  • Their temperament is like a bear – good-natured when left in peace but savage when teased. They can turn quite fearsome if not treated with respect and caution. Trolls are predators, with a highly developed sense of smell, and on occasion have been known to eat humans. They are also very strong. See the images at right of an angry Dovregubben troll, who tips over the troll hunter's truck.

  • They are not particularly intelligent, being known to eat their own tail and rocks. So, if you are in a situation of danger, the best thing to do is to ask the troll a riddle or puzzle. Trolls love brain-teasers but, because of their limited intelligence, it takes them a long time to find the answer, giving you time to escape, or to wait until the morning when the sun comes up and the troll is forced to retreat.

  • Trolls like to eat tyres. By leaving out old tyres it is possible to ascertain whether or not trolls are about in the area.

  • Cover yourself in troll stink - this is the juices squeezed out of a troll. This will disguise your own body odour. It will shortly be available from shops and we will notify you when we have all the details.

  • We strongly urge people not to harm, kill or interfere with trolls in any way but to allow them to live peacefully in their natural habitat.
