Site Upgrade
Over the next few months our entire web site will be undergoing a major upgrade. Although the aesthetics of the Freiburg City Tours site will remain the same the site will be upgraded from its current HTML coding to XHTML.
Why is this upgrade necessary?
This upgrade is necessary as an increasing number of our users are accessing our site using portable devices such as smart phones and tablets. Our site is designed for PC based browsers. Full featured browsers can render HTML based pages despite bad coding whereas the browser in your phone is not as forgiving and may cause our page to display incorrectly.
What exactly is XML?
XML stands for eXtensible Markup Language which has been combined with HTML to create XHTML. XML is a content carrier, designed to carry not display data whereas HTML is designed to display data Unlike HTML, XHTML does not tolerate sloppy coding and must be “well formed” in order to display properly. It is much stricter than HTML and is supported by all major browsers (W3Schools, 2012).
How will this affect our customers?
Our new site will go live on July 1 2012. Testing of our new site has already commenced and will ensure that the upgrade is delivered seamlessly to our customers. Even though we will need to work harder to ensure that our new site complies with the requirements of XHTML the browsing experiences of our customers using newer devices will change significantly. Our error free site will load more efficiently and our new XHMTL skills will enable us to bring you a more complex website in the future as XHTML supports a much wider range of applications than HTML.
