League of Legends

Name:

League of Legends

Who What When Where Why:

League of Legends is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) developed by Riot Games. The game involves playing as a champion, against other champions to complete the objective. The lore behind League of Legends doesnt nominate a timeframe that us humans will recognize, however in real-time the game has been around since 2008. The LoL world is depicted within Runeterra, specifically the continent of Valoran. The game is based around strategy and teamwork, which is why the game has attracted such a large fanbase and has made its mark on E-Sports.

Champions:

At the time of writing there are a total of 113 champions. Each being unique in their own way, they all provide an adequate force of power to the game.
Each champion has 1 Passive ability and 4 Standard abilities. With a few exceptions, each champion will be able to level their 'Q' ability, 'W' ability, and 'E' ability at Level 1. While playing a game, killing neutral monsters and enemy minion troops, you will gain EXP. After gaining enough EXP you will gain a level, unlocking a new ability. Generally speaking each champion will be able to level their 'Q', 'W' and 'E' abilities to 5, and their 'R' ability to 3. With a max level of 18, you will be gathering a new ability/upgrading a previously unlocked ability each level.
Each champion has base stats that can be enhanced by buying items in-game. The main stats are:

For a quick visual of a champion and his/her capabilities, I have included 2 summaries below:
Image of Maokai, the Twisted Treant, tree-based character/champion from League of Legends. Maokai Base Stats:
The Twisted Treant Attack Damage: 58 (+3.3 P/Level) Movement Speed: 335
Melee, Pusher, Tank Attack Speed: 0.694 (+2.13% P/Level) Attack Range: 125
Maokai is not a very popular champion among the Pro scene. He makes a rare appearance in the Jungle position on most occasions, but can be played elsewhere as a niche choice. Armor: 18 (+4 P/Level) Magic Resistance: 30 (+0 P/Level)
Health: 421 (+90 P/Level) Health Regen: 7.25 (+0.85 P/Level)
Sap Magic - PASSIVE: Each time a champion's ability is used near Maokai, he gains a charge of Sap Magic. When he has 5 charges, his next basic attack will heal him for 7% of his maximum health.
Arcane Smash - ACTIVE: Maokai smashes the ground and sends an arcane shockwave forward, dealing magic damage and slowing enemies hit for 2 seconds. Enemies directly around Maokai take the same damage and slow, and are also knocked back.
Twisted Advance - ACTIVE: Maokai transforms into a cloud of arcane energy, becoming untargetable while quickly travelling to a target enemy. Once Maokai reaches the target, the target takes magic damage and is rooted in place for a short time.
Sapling Toss - ACTIVE: Maokai hurls a sapling to a target area, dealing magic damage on impact. The sapling becomes implanted in the ground, granting vision of its surroundings for up to 35 seconds. After a 1 second delay after landing, the sapling will seek out nearby enemies. When an enemy approaches, the sapling will chase for up to 2.5 seconds and explode in an arcane blast that deals magic damage to enemies.
Vengeful Maelstrom - TOGGLE: Maokai creates a great vortex of natural energy on a nearby area reducing non-tower damage done to allied champions in the area by 20%. Maokai can prolong the effect as long as he has mana to spend on it. When the effect ends the stored energy is released, dealing magic damage plus additional magic damage based off the damage stored to enemies within the vortex.

Image of Leona, the Radiant Dawn, a female shield and sword based character/champion from League of Legends. Leona Base Stats:
The Radiant Dawn Attack Damage: 55 (+3 P/Level) Movement Speed: 335
Melee, Tank Attack Speed: 0.625 (+2.9% P/Level) Attack Range: 125
Leona is commonly chosen to play the support role. Her several forms of Crowd Control bring alot to the team, and her natural tankiness assists teamfights. Armor: 18 (+3.1 P/Level) Magic Resistance: 30 (+1.25 P/Level)
Health: 430 (+87 P/Level) Health Regen: 9 (+0.85 P/Level)
Sunlight - Leona's spells charge any enemy unit damaged with Sunlight for 3.5 seconds. When allied champions deal any damage to those targets they consume the Sunlight debuff to deal 20 / 35 / 50 / 65 / 80 / 95 / 110 / 125 / 140 additional magic damage. This additional damage is counted as the ally's damage and it will benefit from their magic penetration. Leona is unable to activate the additional damage herself.
Shield of Daybreak - ACTIVE: Leona's next basic attack will be a shield slam, dealing additional magic damage and stunning the target for 1.25 seconds.
Eclipse - ACTIVE: Leona surrounds herself with a shield of sunlight, gaining bonus armor and magic resistance for 3 seconds. When the effect ends the shield bursts, dealing magic damage to enemies within 275 range of her. If Eclipse damages any enemies, the bonuses remain for an additional 3 seconds.
Zenith Blade - ACTIVE: Leona projects a solar image of her sword, dealing magic damage to all enemies in a line. Leona will dash to the last enemy champion struck, briefly immobilizing it as she does.
Solar Flare - ACTIVE: Leona calls down a beam of solar energy to a target location. After a brief delay, it deals magic damage to all enemies within 250 range and slows them by 80% for 1.5 seconds. Enemies within 100 range are stunned for 1.5 seconds instead of slowed. For the duration, the beam also grants vision in a radius of 350.

Maps:

League of Legends currently has a total of 4 different maps; Summoners Rift, The Howling Abyss, The Crystal Scar, and The Shadow Isles. Summoners Rift is by far the most popular, being the default map for a standard game of 5v5.
Summoners Rift offers a 5v5 game in one of four setups; Normal, Draft, Ranked Team, Ranked Solo Queue. The Shadow Isles offers a 3v3 game in one of three setups; Normal, Draft, Ranked Team. The Crystal Scar offers a completely different style of gameplay and only has 2 game types; Normal, and Draft. The Howling Abyss on the other hand, has one way to play; ARAM (All Random All Mid), this gamemode consists of one lane, with 5 champions per team, however these 10 champions are chosen randomly for each player.
All the maps, except The Crystal Scar, have the same gameplay objectives, and that is to push each 'lane' to the enemies base and destroy the Nexus. Summoners Rift has 3 lanes (Top, Mid, Bot), The Shadow Isles has 2 lanes (Top, Bot) and The Howling Abyss has one lane.

Roles:

In a standard game of 5v5, on Summoners Rift, you will find there are 5 different roles to play following the current meta.
Each role, has many different duties and what I have listed is only a very vague outline. The 5 roles are:

Items:

During a game chmapions may purchase items at any time, so long as they are standing on the Fountain. Different items provide different bonuses ranging from increased Attack Damage, to Movement Speed. Some items have an 'active' ability which can be used at any time.
The better the item, the more gold it costs. Gold is generated passively throughout the game at a slow rate, but can be made by killing Neutral Monsters, Enemy Minions, or Enemy Champions.

I have included a quick summary of one of the most popular items:
The Bloodthirster
3200 Gold
+70 Attack Damage
+12% Life Steal

Gains 1 stack per kill, up to a maximum of 30. Each stack grants +1 attack damage and +0.2% life steal (max: +30 attack damage and +6% life steal). Half of the current stacks are lost upon death.
The Bloodthirster is built from:
+ + 850 Gold

Note:

Nearly all the above information has come from my own knowledge, from playing the game for over a year on a daily basis. Any information that was taken from another source has been appropriately referenced.
Also note that this information is a general outline of the game, and to fully understand the game mechanics and what is involved, you are better off actually playing the game, rather than reading about it.
