A visit to Takayama, in the Japanese Alps is to step into Japan's colourful history.

Although the city was founded in 1936, the area has been settled since the Jomon Period, which dates from 14 000 BCE.

A major attaction in Takayama are the private houses near the centre of the town, which have been preserved so that visitors might glimpse at a Japan before the arrival of bright lights and robots.

Nearby is an historic village, where a collection of historical houses have been relocated, so that customs of Old Japan might be experienced by those living in the 21st century.

The slower pace of life in this small village and the fresh clean mountain air provide a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of the huge cities Japan is known for.
