If you wish to enter any data in a cell or perform any formatting within a spreadsheet you need to select a cell. The selection is called a "range"

When a single cell is selected it is known as the active cell.

Even if a range is a block of cells there is still an active cell.

Select the following single cells:

A2, B5, C7, E1

Select the following block of cells, click and drag the pointer:

B2:E5

Use Shift+Click to select:

Click on cell A1. Hold down Shift, click on F3

Use Ctrl+Click to select:

Click on cell A1. Hold down Ctrl, click on F3
