As we all know first person shooters puts the use in the shoes of a gun toting maniac or a systematic calculated and controlled assassin. The genre allows to player to develop playstyles of their own whether its from their own personality or an online personality they create for themselves. For example, in my early Quake 3 days I was a pretty outrageous player, teabagging killed opponents and going for as many humilations as possible even if it means getting killed. Once I had played at a few LAN parties I was known by the people I played with as that personality. It wasn't until I started playing in tournaments where I had to remake my image as my mates(who also joined in the tournaments) would know how I played. So I became the systematic assassin, making every shot count rarely getting melee kills and minimilising my deaths.
This was apparent again when I played COD4 on lan with a group of guys in Canberra where I played at the local internet cafe The Barracks. It was here that I was known as a sniper, always quickaiming noobs and dominating at long range. When "the Rax" held a tournament however, I knew I had to change my online personality to that which will counter the builds which were created in spite of my sniper play. The more you play the more you can develop these personalities and become a great jack-of-all-trades player. Once you have developed these personalities you can use them to your advantage when playing in compeditive play against your friends as they won't know which personality you are going to be or when against strangers you have an arsonal of playstyles to counter them.
In 2008 the Barracks entered a multi Lan Cafe tournament in which we were aptly named BAR. With the gamer tag [BAR]STPwnaGe I joined the 7 other members of the local internet cafe and tore through the competition using hamachi as our means of lanning. We won 13 out of 14 matched topping the ladder and winning the first of many of these types of tournaments. There was so much interest in this tournament 30 other internet cafes joined along with 2 more full teams to represent the barracks BAR2 and BAR3. I joined BAR2 and by the end of the second season our we had only lost 4 games out of 40. in the quarter finals we won 4/7 games moving onto the semi finals where we had to verse BAR 3 for a spot in the grand final. We won 4/2 and moved into the grand final against the original BAR. Bar vs BAR2 was the closest matchup I have ever had the privilege of being a part of. The first round was 3/3 with the final match being a draw. We agreed to have another full round in which this time there was 3 draws and 2 wins a piece. We decided to go search and destroy to give a possible clear winner in which case we were bested 4/3 in the sudden death round by the luckiest of lucky grenades blindly thrown to the entrance of the bomb area in which myself and the last remaining living member of my team died.
I have had some great experiences playing FPS, most recently I got second in an army-only run COD MW3 tournament placing behind one of the best COD players I have ever seen, named Pirate-Medic. Battlefied 3 was a great experience playing however with work, UNI and fiance commitments I've had to tone down my gaming to ones I really have a passion for. I have to say BF3 has got to be the best FPS I have ever played but I encountered alot of errors due to the developers rushing the release of BF3 to beat MW3. Origin doesn't appeal to me in the slightest and though that may have been one of the catalysts for myself leaving BF3, it doesn't mean I won't come back for a session here and there.
