There is somewhat of a stigma assigned to this genre of gaming however most of the people who try to cut down those who are proud to call themselves seasoned RPG pros are just noobs anyway. The RPG game genre has humble beginnings to those of dragon warrior, Vampire: The Masquerade, dragon quest, zelda, the eldar scrolls, final fantasy, ultima and Ars Magica. In fact, many old-school gamers even considered adventure games such as mario bros and alex the kid as RPG and argue the fact that the RPG genre has simply evolved and allowed a deeper gaming experience, one which would be almost impossible looking at that 8 bit character with 2 frames of attacking animation.
I have been a big fan of RPG's since I got my first taste from diablo 1. Since then I have played every major RPG series that has been released from Eldar scrolls to Icewind Dale, Baldurs gate, Dragon Age and multiple MMO RPG's like WoW, Age of Conan and Ultima Online. As much as I enjoyed MMORPG's and played compeditively like I did in WoW arena as a 2007 rated 2v2 team as a Hunter, I have left that scene as it has left a foul taste in my mouth after developers making promises they can't keep and the overwhelming amount of noobs. It is for these reasons and more that I moved on to a more offline approach to RPG gaming with the likes of Dragon Age:Origins and Skyrim.
These games offer an amazingly deep role-playing experience while allowing a multitute of customising techniques for your character and a vivid world to explore. Each game has their strengths and weaknesses but like a true gamer I'm only going to commend the developers on their accomplishments such as the amazing ever-changing storyline in Dragon age and the expansive and amazing landscape of the world in Skyrim. Up until I played Dragon Age I believed that Neverwinter nights was the best RPG ever created, when you take into account every aspect that makes a game great then the aspects that make an RPG great, I believed that it would never be outclassed. As good as Skyrim was I still didn't think it beat Neverwinter nights 2 in alot of aspects, storyline being one of them. In Dragon Age however, the story was ever-changing, affecting the future of your character a little or alot. The capability given to modders to change the source code to create their own mods was another thing that tipped Dragon Age over the top for me. Some very impressive mods were released for Dragon age and I recommend everyone who wants to play or has played and would like a new experience to check them out here.
I look forward to what is to come in the world of RPG's particularly Diablo 3 when I have the ability to play it. I look forward to playing compeditively in PVP :D.
