Pedagogy and Assesment |
|
Pedagogy & Assessment Pedagogy is the jargon we use for teaching. It is also known as the ‘art & science of teaching’ or the ‘art & craft of teaching’. Pedagogy is the ‘what you do’ and ‘how you do it’, of teaching. Assessment is fundamental to your pedagogical
practices: you need to know if what you are teaching has worked and
how much each student has
understood in order to teach well. Assessment takes a wide range of forms
and you’ll probably be familiar with formal tests and essays. However,
there are other ways of approaching assessment, depending on what you
are trying to find out, for example: observations, checklists, portfolios,
creative presentations, power points, anecdotal records. It’s important
to remember that assessment is part and parcel of what you do on a daily
basis as a teacher.
*Coaching netball (not a link) As it states in the above definition, it is fundemental to know if what you are teaching has worked and how much a student understood. The same princibles apply when coaching a sporting team. I coached my sister's Under 15's netball team in 2002. In order to see if my coaching was making a difference to their game, i attended their saturday afternoon games. I would observe and then assess the strenghths and weaknesses of each individual player and then as a whole team. This assessment method allowed me to work out what needed to be adressed in each coaching session. It is important for teachers to approach their classrooms in the same manner to teach effectively. The S.L.I.P (Student Literacy In Progress) program is a joint venture between Schools and TAFE. The program involves a senior student helping a junior student develop literacy skills. This was achieved by students reading aloud, developing vocabulary lists and developing games to assist in literacy development. Senior students constantly had to assess their students to be able to futher develop and expand their students literacy skills. This was done through quizzes, reading tests, self- evaluation, evaluation done by teachers and by keeping a diary. In classrooms, teachers use a variety of assessment methods and it is important that teachers be aware of this. |
