Coming together
Australian and New Zealand law libraries involved in the ALLA initiative; The Pacific Law Library Twinning Program have provided a point of contact and support for many Pacific law library staff.
Forming a network of support across the Pacific region has been difficult, due to a lack of technology and the physical distances involved.
The Pacific Law Library Twinning Program invited law library staff involved in the Program to attend a workshop in Vanuatu in May 2009. The decision to share email addresses in preparation for the workshop was the beginning of the formation of the PILLC.
History of the PILLC
The group of library staff who attended the 2009 workshop solidified their email friendships through meeting face to face for the first time and sharing the workshop experience. The group decided to make a list of recommendations at the conclusion of the workshop to ensure they would continue to keep in contact as a supportive network.
This was the birth of the PILLC. Since the workshop pacific law library staff have supported each other by keeping in contact via email and answering questions on their own legal systems.
Future directions
The PILLC will be meeting again in Samoa 2011 for a second workshop. At this workshop some of the original PILLC members will be taking a leadership role and delivering training sessions.
Pacific law library staff are invited to attend the workshop and become involved in the PILLC to help determine the future direction of the group.
