Pedagogy has been defined as the art of instruction or teaching. "It is the 'what you do' and 'how you do it', of teaching." "Assessment
is fundamental to your pedagogical practices: you need to know if what
you are teaching has worked and how much each student has understood in
order to teach well. Assessment takes a wide range of forms and you'll
probably be familiar with formal tests and essays. However, there are
other ways of approaching assessment, depending on what you are trying
to find out, for example: observations, checklists, portfolios, creative
presentations, power points, anecdotal records. It's important to remember
that assessment is part and parcel of what you do on a daily basis as
a teacher" (Ailwood, 2004). I have increased my expertise in the area of pedagogy through coaching an under 10's girls basketball team for two years. The 'Mountain Devils', as they called themselves were runners up in my first year of caoching, and improved this to champions in my second year. The experience of helping my girls to grasp the skills necessary to compete in a competitive competition allowed me to expand my teaching ability and helped me to realise that this type of teaching was something that I really enjoyed. This was an experience that helped me to realise that I wanted to become a PE teacher. In 2001, I completed my work experience at a local primary school. I found this experience very enjoyable and helpful. The week that I spent at the school showed me the differences and similarities between classroom teaching and what I was used to as practical, outdoor teaching as a coach. I was placed with a year 1 class, so the kids were much younger than I was used to, but I found that I adapted to this difference well, finding out how to get through to kids of this age. That is, simplifying things for them to understand and using references relevant to hem. I believe
these two pedagogical experiences have helped to shape me into a mature
young adult who understands the educational needs of those in my care.
I like to think I have made a positive difference in some way to these
students, and I hope I can continue to make a difference.
