When you log into your unix account, you will find yourself in your home directory. This home directory is a plce on the unix server where you can store any files and directories you create.
All directories are organised into a hierachical structure that is usually imagined as a "family tree". The parent directory of the tree is known as the root directory and is written as a slash (/).
