- Helpful Hints -

In this section, you will find a couple of time saving tips, that you may find helpful.

tab

Hitting the tab key is a good way to save you having to type out long file names. For example, if I have 2 files in my directory called my_very_long_filename and my_other_very_long_filename and I wished to view one of them using more, I could type more my_v and hit the tab key, which would expand that to more my_very_long_filename.

NOTE: Tab completion is a feature of the bash shell, and may not work if you are using a different shell such as csh or tcsh.

keyboard arrows

Another time saving feature are the keyboard arrows. Hitting the up arrow at the prompt, will display the last command you typed, hitting it again will display the one before that, and so on. This is useful if you repeat the same commands frequently. If you hit the up arrow too many times, just hit the down arrow, until the command you are after is displayed.
