For the purposes of this tutorial, it is assumed that you already have a UNIX account, and have access to a telnet client.
For the purposes of this example, I've used QVT/Term, however, any telnet client will do. If you don't already have one, take a look at the Tucows website or Download.com to get one.
Once you have located and opened your telnet program, you will need to open a terminal session which in QVT/Term, is done by clicking on the indicated button.
Now type the name of the host you wish to connect to, (for example host.example.com)...you must use the name of the server on which you have an account), into the host name box and hit enter.
This will bring up a window similar to the one below, and you can then proceed to log into the system.
At the login: prompt, type in your username (this will be provided by the system administrator), and then press enter. Next type your password at the Password: prompt. Your password will not appear on the screen when you type it in.
You should now see something similar to:
hostname:~username> or
hostname%
