What is information architecture?

The Information Architecture Institute defines "information architecture as the art and science of organizing and labeling websites, intranets, online communities and software to support usability".
This encompasses the organization, labeling, navigation and searching systems of a website, intranet or online community.


What are information architecture tools?

They are software tools available to assist information architects to produce effective information architecture of a site.  They can be used in the development of the information architecture strategy or in the site development itself. Various types of software include:
  • Analytical tools
  • Automatic classification software
  • Content management systems
  • Database management systems
  • Diagramming softwarePortals
  • Prototyping tools
  • Search engines
  • Thesaurus management tools
  • User research tools
This website will describe and evaluate 3 different commercially available software tools from the 3 of the above categories; an analytical tool, a prototyping tool and a user research tool.
