 XML

XML is an acronym for Extensible Markup Language. XML is an international data standard and the goal is to separate presentation, structure and meaning from content. Navigate Home will begin the process to upgrade our site using XML.

Why We Will Upgrade Using XML

XML has become as important to the web as HTML was to the development of the web. XML is now the most widely used tool for tranmitting date between various applications. As applications, such as mobile technologies, continue to evolve, it will become increasingly important to have a tool that can communicate easily between applications.

Implementation

HTML5 is the anticipated successor to XHTML, which uses tags and attributes of HTML with the syntax of XML. Many browsers (Firefox 4, Safari 5 and Google Chrome)already support some of the new features of HTML5.

How The Site Will Be Affected

XML is now as important for the web as HTML was to the foundation of the web. It is the most common tool used for transmitting data between many different applications. Our goal is for our clients to be able to interact with our site during the process of our partnership. This will mean that information will come to us from many different places in many different forms. When a change needs to be made in content, using XML will mean it only needs to be changed in one place. This will make our site and our interation with our clients more efficient and save you time with your project.

Advantages Of XML

XML provides labels for sections of a document, making them easier to find, move and transfer. XML will allow us to use data from more sources in more ways. Upgrading our own site to XML will provide us with the opportunity to extract data from various sources, store in an accessible location and have access to that data whenever it is needed. Changes to content will be made more quickly and efficiently. If system upgrades are required in the future, these changeovers will be more seamless.New operating systems, applications and browsers can be used without the fear of losing data. This will be important as we work with our clients in various formats, depending on their changing needs.

Disadvantages of XML

XML has become increasingly complex, negatively affecting usability.  XML tools now take longer to develop. An intial time commitment to using XML will have to take place before it is fully implemented. Not all browsers support XML, but with any technology, compatibility will continue to change and evolve.
