Interview Skye Rocket Studio Skye Davis a Wagga Wagga photographer What was the most interesting project that you have worked on? I have photographed Katrina Chambers for the marketplace, naked footballers for a fundraising calendar, and four hairdressers on one motorbike, an old metal bed in a paddock with wattle flowers everywhere, a woman in the river with fabric flowing down the water, and most recently a maternity session on top of a hill with fabric billowing behind her What was the weirdest/ funniest project that you have worked on? Naked footballers for a fundraising calendar. I can tell you for a fact that rubbing baby oil on footy player’s muscles really does give them better definitions in the photos. On the front cover of the calendar I had five of the guys walking away from the camera fully naked with a score board behind them and all you could really see was their bums. Most of the guys knew that they were good looking and it showed, the guys who thought big of themselves were harder to photograph than the ones that weren’t as confident. After doing this calendar I then was asked to do one with female netballers, girls are harder to photograph than guys; they care too much about how their bodies look. What do you love about what you do? Kids real smiles, the relationship between a mother and her new born baby, hugs from my little clients, the random facts kids tell me, capturing an image and the mum looks at it and says “that’s so them, you have captured their personality”. Who/ what inspires you? Ohhh so many things! For photographs I love Jinky art, baby as art, Shannon Sewell, Sue Bryce and many more. But I also find inspiration in fashion magazines, kids clothing shops and from random things like furniture. Have you had to make any sacrifice? If so what? This business takes up a lot of time and I have missed out on a lot of time with friends and family. It also has taken over a large portion of my house Why did you choose to practice photography in the way you do? It has taken years to find my style; I’m only now just starting to figure it out. Why did you choose to enter into this career? I completed a bachelor of arts in graphic design but always loved photography the most. If I had to do a logo for something like a café I would take a photo of glasses and use that. If you could work with any other photographer, graphic design or artist who would it be? Why? Jinky art (Barb Uil) because her work is amazing, she styles her shoots beautifully and Sue Bryce does the most beautiful boudoir shots using all natural light. I would learn so much from either of them What advice do you have for student/ people that wish to enter into the photography industry as a career? Learn your camera inside and out, practice constantly, find your own style, and remember that being a photographer is not just about photography, it’s also about running a successful business, so you need skills in that area too.
