Interview with Jane Yeow Jane is on student exchange from Malaysia who is studying Medical Radiation Science. Jane can you tell me some random, quirky things about yourself? (not an interview question, will just be in the start of my writing) ? I Pole dance for fitness and fun and I am a black belt in taekwondo, fave food indian, spicy food, thai, I love reptiles, dogs, hampsters, I have a monitor lizard. Enjoys Exotic food like crickets scrorpians and worms. Smokes shisha, in apple, strawberry bubblegum banana, caramel. Any flavor really. loves Lamb shank. Learning to cook, so lots of Asian food, noodles fried rice, very ramdom ingredients, anything rice, lots of chinese herbel soup. Technology is my best friend. I had my first mobile at 10. What made you want to move to Australia and study? The Community is amazing and the education, economy is a thousand times better and also because a lot of my relatives are here as they are Studying, working, and just enjoy living here. What do you love about what you do? And was there anyone in particular who influenced you into following this career path? YES (Laughs) my mum said it was what I was doing, I didn’t get to choose as I come from a medical background, mum is a radiographer and my father is a doctor in Malaysia. They own a medical practice. And I mostly love the Human anatomey and pathology part. Your thoughts on the land of Aus, are you enjoying living here? Community is good, friendly nice pleasant people, and so like crime isn’t as big here as it is in Maylasia and I feel so much more safe in here. Driving here, Oh my god, is easy peasy, back in Malaysia is real bad, its chaotic and in a rush. No one gives way, like dream on, the only way you get can out of somewhere is if you stick your nose right out. So much safer and easier here. Where did you grow up and is it very different to the Australian lifestyle? Seremban In Malaysia, its quite small and very multi racial, like indidain, chinese Malay and Punjabi. Shopping is really good. It is ruled by a Islamic nation and muslim religion depending on your race. One thing is since I was small I have always had a fulltime maid who lives in our house, she is Indonesian, like in morning she gets up at 5, she mops the house, she would wake me at 6, cook me breakfast, we go to school, she then does all the house chores, cause my house is bigger than most around here, we have a 3 story house, (laughs) lots of stairs and climbing to do. She does practically everything. Have you lived anywhere else in Australia other the Wagga Wagga? Yeah Melbourne, I live there during the holidays, but I have also been to perth, Brisbane, goldcoast Sydney, and when I went back to malaysia I stayed in Thailand for a while. What is your favorite this about the ‘uni life’? Metroplolitan unis and inland unis are very different because inland uni provide accommodation and are more social, as they are all in the same place and have no where to go, (laughs) meeting people, like a lot are from really small towns that I wouldn’t even know could exist, I know people from Narrabri with like a population of 6 thousand, see that’s really small to me, I didn’t really know such small towns exist, (laugh) I come from a population of 419536 people. When did you learn English? English was my first language, but the national language is Malay, so if I was writing formal letters and stuff I would write it in Malay. Do you speak any other languages? English, Malay, Mandarin, Cantonese, yeah that’s the four main spoken ones from where I am from. Do you have any other interests? I actually like drawing. A lot. When I was small we actually had ceramic classes so I really like that. I also have done ballet and I used to do piano classes until I would fall asleep. I am from a typical Asian family (laughs) Be at school at 630-1-2pm. What do you miss most about Malaysia? The food (laughs) and shopping, it is way cheaper there, if you have a currency exchange rate between aussie and malay its wayyy cheaper in Malaysia. The exchange rate from aus to malay is very low. So like 1 aussie dollar = RM 3.25, so much more expensive to live in Australia. What is the weather like in Malaysia compared to here ? Its humid and hot, but its like always summer (laughs) so we actually would always have to bathe more than once or twice a day, its sticky and I would sweat heaps, its never a winter there so like being able to buy winter clothes here. What about Malaysia’s atmosphere and nightlife ? Its so different to Australia, they have like Hawker stalls, its like food, clothes and everything really. Like Chinese new years, shopping centres and all the shops are open till 1am, and all year we have 24 hour shops. Its much more fun over there, to me anyway. (laughs) Words _ Tamika Gallagher
