Interview with Thomas Williams 1- What do you do for a living? While studying at university I currently make my way as a deejay, Playing in local establisments and private functions for nightmoves. 2- Tell me about how you got into your line of work. Music and deejaying have been a hobby of mine since first being introduced to the outdoor party seen of the mid north coast in 2004/05. Although somewhat less important in life than attempting to successfully navigate through secondary education, the art of deejaying and the musical association played a crucial role in entertainment and distraction for my teenage years. On enrolling at university in Wagga Wagga, an opportunity arose through a friend to undertake the practice as a profession. I jumped at the idea and have been paid to play music for the last eighteen months. 3- Do you like your job? As much as all jobs have their ups and downs, on rare occasions quiet nights come around and you find yourself playing to an essentially empty room. But I have no intention to stop in the near future. The pro’s far outweigh the cons. 4- Did you ever see yourself being a deejay when you were growing up? In all honesty, I am still growing up (can’t even grow a moustache). Yes I always hoped to one day play music for the entertainment of others, however never thought this hobby could become a career opportunity. 5- What lessons has your work life taught you? “Nothing good ever happens after two a.m.” and never play Nelly’s “Flap your wings” even if the girl has a massive boyfriend. I think it’s taught me how to read a crowd really well. This translates into everyday life positively. The ability to persuade people is a brilliant characteristic in getting places. Looking at a crowd and the people in it has helped me fine tune this. 6- Do you have any favorite stories from your work life? As much as it is a fulfilling job, I don’t really have any specific moments to reminisce about. I love to play music that gets the crowd involved and dancing. Moments of self-doubt followed by crowd hysteria are probably my favorite times. A packed night is always a buzz. 7- What is the craziest thing you’ve seen whilst working?
