INTREVIEW QUESTIONS By Joel Easson 1. Tell us a little about yourself? a. My name is Katrina Churchill. I’m currently a second-year student at Charles Sturt University studying a Bachelor of Arts in Television Production. 2. How long have you been drawing? a. Growing up my life has always been arts orientated, since starting stage acting as a young child till realising I much prefer to work behind-the-scenes. As far back as I can remember, I was always drawing or creating something with my hands. I’m not necessarily saying that the things I made held any artistic merit by any means- most of the time I look back and cringe- but I still enjoyed it, and I suppose that is the main thing. 3. What inspires you most to get out the pencils? a. Personally, I find inspiration in other creative things like music, books, video games, and movies and other people's art. Sometimes I'll see a piece and want to make something because of it, often times completely unrelated to what I just looked at and not even in a similar technique. More often than not I’ll be sitting on a bus or train and my mind will wander, and from that I will visualise something I want to create. The majority of the things I do are actually started this way.
 4. Tell us about some of your most favoured tools of the trade and why you use them. a. I usually like to stick with my favourite Moleskine art journal in terms of paper. It’s big enough to draw in comfortably, but small enough to carry in your handbag or take with you wherever you go if inspiration strikes. The paper is also ivory-coloured and lovely to draw or write on, so I tend to rely on that. As for a favourite pencil, I don’t know why but I have always liked mechanical pencils. You can always achieve nice, sharp lines without having to constantly pull out the pencil sharpener, and once it runs out of graphite you can simply re-fill it. And with either a plastic or metallic casing, they are surprisingly resilient pencils and a cut above the rest in terms of allowing you to get really detailed with your work. 5. Do you have any favourite artists? a. My absolute favourite artist would have to be Michael Hussar, however I have other favourite artists such as Audrey Kawasaki, Sarah Blake, and Caitlin Hackett. The artists I like rarely use the same media as I do, but this doesn’t prevent them from consistently impressing me. 6. Where would you like your art to take you? a.
Honestly, I don’t know. I am fairly content with where I am right now. Generally I’ll draw only to please myself; when I want to express an idea or visually flesh out something I’ve thought of. I feel incredibly self-conscious when someone new sees something I’ve drawn. For this reason, even if I did want my art to take me places, I don’t think I wound enjoy it as much as I do keeping my art close.
