What is
Information Architecture?
There
have been dramatic changes to the information environment in
recent decades with the emergence of digital resources and
ever-increasing amounts of information being stored
electronically in public spaces such as the internet or on
private systems and databases such as Intranets. In light of
this, the need to develop methods and systems for organising
content and facilitating better access to this information has
become essential which has led to the emergence of
Information Architecture (IA) as a discipline. As a relatively
new field there are differing views regarding how
IA should be defined (White, 2004),but the current
definition as outlined by The Information Architecture
Institute is as follows;
-
The structural design of shared
information environments.
-
The art and science of organizing
and labelling web sites, intranets, online communities and
software to support usability and findability.
-
An
emerging community of practice focused on bringing
principles of design and architecture to the digital
landscape.
