ACADEMIC
DISHONESTY: A PLAGUE ON OUR PROFESSION. Education Academic
misconduct is defined as "intellectual theft" and is
seen as endemic in our society. Cheating occurs in many
forms and is seen as a precursor to later, more venal
offenses. The failure of parents, teachers,
administrators, and school boards to maintain a vigilant
and proactive stance on academic misdeed is portrayed as
a partial reason the practice remains so widespread. A
case is made to be more emphatic about rooting out as
much cheating as is practical and to make the
apprehension process a learning experience so as to
teach children why cheating is wrong and not so much to
punish them, at least in initial occurrences.
