PBE Programs

EFPI offers a range of initiatives which seek to assist in the implementation of PBE at CSU. PBE programs span professional development events, teaching fellowships and the development of resources. Increasing the capacity of staff to integrate PBE within their teaching, learning and assessment influences how spaces are created which foster the professional and social capabilities of students:

“Practice-based education (PBE) provides a curriculum framework for these courses. Throughout CSU curricula, teaching, learning, assessment, curriculum design, the learning environment and infrastructure are geared towards grounding students’ learning in preparation for their practice or work roles and responsibilities in their occupation, profession or industry after graduation." (Higgs, 2011)

1)      Professional Development

EFPI conducts a wide variety of staff development programs spanning workshops, seminars, debates and a summit to examine how PBE is integrated within CSU teaching, learning and assessment.

2)      Teaching Fellows

Competitive teaching fellowships are offered annually with funding to support the successful applicants scholarship in an area of PBE. The four faculties and EFPI provide for funding of up to six $10,000 fellowships. EFPI manages and mentors the fellows.

3)     Professional and practice-based education standards

EFPI led the development of a set of standards for all courses that lead to profession-specific employment. A very inclusive process was undertaken in 2010 to develop this comprehensive set of professional and practice-based standards that were accepted at Academic Senate in September 2010. The primary goal of the standards is to provide an instrument for quality enhancement.
