My undergraduate degree was completed in 1992 and I was able to get a job at an academic library in the technical services area. After a stint working in an academic library, I started working in public libraries in 1997. I've gone through a number of roles in the public library from cataloguing officer, Senior cataloguer and classifier, acting Team Leader and User Education Librarian. My current role is as Reference Technology Librarian. All the roles involved the provision of information to the public.
During this period I became interested in different technologies and how people used them. I also began training members of the public on how to use technology, from how to search the catalogue to how to open Word and write a job application to how to use web 2.0 technologies like Twitter, Facebook, blogs and wikis.
I am fascinated with how people utilise technology and how I can better assist people in finding the information that they need utilising all the tools available. I'm always looking at upgrading my skills and so I decided to update my skills by enrolling to do a postgraduate degree at Charles Sturt University which I finished in 2008.
I started exploring other technologies while employed as User Education Librarian by participating in a "Learning 2.0" course provided by the State Library of New South Wales which enabled me to learn about blogging, Facebook, Twitter, wikis and other technologies. I started my first blog Library Dreamings. I have maintained this blog but have created a number of other blogs. I have also been involved in creating blogs for work which has prompted my desire to learn more about information technology. With the start of a new job as the Reference Technology Librarian which involves looking after the libraries information technology as well as teaching the public how to use various technologies, I decided it would be a good idea to pursue further studies, which ensured in me enrolling in further postgraduate studies.
To keep my skills up to date and relevant to my work I have undertaken a number of different courses. I am a strong beleiver in lifelong learning and am continually striving to improve my skills and knowledge. Some of the courses I have done are:
I have always beleived that it was important to be a member, and where possible also be involved in some way, with the professional body representing your industry. I have been a member of the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) since my early days as an undergraduate student. In recent times I have also become involved as Treasurer for one of the local groups of the professional association. Aim of the group is to provide information, training and networking opportunities for those in the industry that they may not otherwise have available to them by other means. One of the areas of interest is the new technologies and the opportunities they present in providing members of the public with access to information.
